- ABOUT
THE STORY COACH |
|
| In
addition to being a paid and optioned writer,
screenwriter, and script doctor himself, Dr.
Horton is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild,
founding principal of Wind & Thunder
Productions, and
an ongoing presenter, panelist, and mentor for a wide
variety of media industry organizations, guilds, and
professional groups. His workshops and forthcoming book are
the first to speak effectively across professional media
specialties to address both the private and collective
aspects of the development process from conception to
completion, and effectively merge the creative and
commercial aspects of story development and promotion
for a more artistically, commercially, and socially
viable media. First and
foremost, however, he remains an applied cultural
anthropologist and change agent dedicated to promoting
life affirming visions, and
practical strategies for effective personal, social, and
global change. |
In community and corporate settings, he
sets new standards in using the power of story for
effective needs assessment, strategic planning, conflict
resolution, and market/mission/team building. He is a
repeated star
speaker of Screenwriting Expo, and is currently working
on multiple film, documentary, and television projects,
while also returning to the long delayed book version of
his seminars.
As an
educator, clinician, writer, and applied cultural
anthropologist of many years and in many settings, Dr.
Horton has been intensely interested in what gives
purpose and meaning in people’s lives. In what moves
and facilitates people, organizations, and entire
cultures to grow and change. In what allows people and
entire groups to envision and achieve their optimum
potential. In what allows anyone to visualize then
realize their dream.
As an administrator, trainer,
clinician, and consultant, he has impacted the real
lives of countless individuals, families, and groups in
ways others predicted would be impossible and has
developed and/or transformed programs to precedent
setting standards that often brought together entire
systems of contentious players. One of his current key
areas of interest is in the effective enhancement and
merging of media and social change.
Along
with developing the then landmark Alcohol/Drug Studies
Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara,
Dr. Horton effectively worked with, trained, or
supervised myriad professionals, from health care and
academia to business and government - with additional
overlapping experience in judicial-correctional systems. He
is an effective guide for dealing with the real
world in many diverse arenas and settings, and equally
effective in drawing from the real world with
authenticity and power for great resonant storytelling
and presentations that capture and make sense of the
stuff of life. |

"As one of the co-facilitators
of the TANO Media Institute's annual retreats for women filmmakers, I
have watched Dr. Patrick Horton repeatedly guide successive groups
of women writers and filmmakers to levels of expression and
depth of voice none of us imagined possible.
When I invited him
to the 2007 University of New Mexico Gallup Film
Bootcamp, he repeated this performance with a very mixed
group of high school students initially separated by gender,
class, and ethnicity. In almost no time at all, Dr. Horton drew
them all in and helped them transform into a single unified
group of young adults working enthusiastically together as
collaborating actors, writers, directors, and photographers.
In his private
work with me as an ever evolving screenwriter, he patiently walks me
through shifts in how I work and give birth to material. He has
completely opened my own creativity and vision of what is
possible.
Regardless of
audience age, gender, ethnicity, or culture, he creates a
playful and empowering space to find and manifest your voice in a
way that is not only uniquely fulfilling creatively, but that can
then succeed practically in a changing industry."
